When her phone chimed in her ear, Jill startled, forgetting that she still had her headphones on. Distracted by the gun in her hand, she took the call.

Mindy again. She jumped right in, not even saying hello. “Detectives are making the rounds. They’re at Savannah Gunnison’s right now. They’re checking on everyone who was at the party last night.”

The Gunnisons lived down the street. That meant their house was probably next. Jill balanced the heavy gun in the palm of her hand. She knew a little about guns. Her father had been in the military, and he’d taught her to shoot when she was a kid.

She popped the cylinder and counted the rounds. Only two when the gun held five. Even if one was in the chamber, she’d come up short.

A little bit of black gun powder colored the muzzle, indicating the gun had been recently fired.

Not good.

“Are you still there?” Mindy wanted to know.

The doorbell startled her. “I think they’re here. I’ve got to go.”

Jill hung up not waiting for an answer. Putting the gun back in the bag, she zipped it shut and took it with her. Stopping at the hall closet, she shoved the bag behind a row of winter boots.

Pausing at the mirror, she checked her reflection, wiping away the smudge of gunpowder on the back of her hand before opening the door.
